Strategic Decoupling
Globalisation is an invention of technology.
America built its empire on technology, not legions or navies. It created global control through technological systems spanning jet engines to pharmaceuticals, space to internet to culture. But technology alone does not guarantee dominance. The real power lies in what comes after. Dependency chains lock countries into American ecosystems. Upgrade paths last decades. Standards embed American preferences into systems other nations cannot escape. As noted in earlier chapters, this technological control rests on currency dominance and SWIFT infrastructure. But the hard core is technology itself. Without it, the financial system has very little to leverage.
Understanding this system requires seeing past individual technologies to the underlying architecture. Every civilian innovation serves military purposes. Every standard embeds strategic preferences. Every dependency creates leverage points for diplomatic pressure.
The strategy lies in making control appear as technical necessity or generous sharing. Countries embrace American systems because they work better, not because they recognize the strategic implications. By the time dependency becomes apparent, switching costs often make alternatives prohibitively expensive.
The Jet Engine Leverage
India ordered 99 GE F404 engines in 2021. Delivery was set for 2023. Suddenly there were supply chain issues. The timeline shifted to 2025. Meanwhile, Europe's Gripen jets and South Korea's KAI T-50s received their engines on schedule.
This was not incompetence. It was strategic timing. When India tested nuclear weapons or disputed trade terms, suddenly there were manufacturing delays. When relations improved, deliveries resumed. The pattern repeats across multiple technologies and countries. Boeing's maintenance halt in Russia after Ukraine shows how quickly civilian technologies become diplomatic weapons.
Once you buy American engines, you need American maintenance contracts. You need spare parts. You need training programs. You need to upgrade paths for decades. The initial sale is the hook. What matters is the machine that follows.
India's Tejas production stalled at two jets, not because of Indian incompetence but because of American supply control. This ecosystem lock-in makes switching costs prohibitive. Rebuilding the supply chain once an entire defence program is built around American components is not easy but this is what the USA can force others to do. Now UK and France are negotiating with India on transfer technology related to jet engine production. Now Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), an Indian public sector undertaking, and Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the production of the civil commuter aircraft SJ-100 in India. All this is crucial for India's goal of * self-reliance in defence manufacturing* . In reality it means decoupling from the USA.
Medical Imperialism
U.S. patent laws keep life-saving medicines unaffordable. Minor chemical tweaks extend monopolies for decades. India's Supreme Court rejected Novartis' Glivec patent in 2013 because the tweak didn't justify controlling a cancer drug people needed.
The COVID response revealed the system's true nature. America blocked India's vaccine input supplies while hoarding vaccines domestically. Only when India's NSA allegedly threatened to halt crucial inputs for pharmaceutical exports from Mumbai did supplies resume. The empire chose control over global health. Healing became a lever of power rather than a humanitarian imperative.
Computing and Data Dominance
IBM's early systems did not just boost business productivity. They ran Pentagon logistics. Silicon Valley did not accidentally become the global standard setter. These dual civilian-military applications were strategic from the beginning.
The NSA's PRISM program tapped global communications while companies like Google and Amazon controlled data flows worldwide. Countries adopted American hardware and protocols thinking they were making independent technical choices. Actually, they were embedding American surveillance capabilities into their digital infrastructure. The internet democratized information. It also enabled comprehensive monitoring on a scale nobody noticed because access was free.
The theft is constant. WhatsApp reads your messages. Facebook uses that data to target you with advertisements for things you discussed in private emails. Gmail reads your messages and serves advertisements based on content. A person receives emails about selling an old car. They get advertisements for used cars. Not because they searched for used cars. Because Gmail read their private emails and sold that information to advertisers.
Surveillance happens in the background while users believe they are getting a free service. They are not customers. They are products being sold to advertisers. American companies control this data flow. Every message, every search, every conversation flows through American infrastructure and gets monetized.
The government of India switched the email to indigenous Zoho and announced the decision in public. The home minister tweeted about it. Technology and Education Minister ditched Microsoft word/365 to adopt Zoho office suit. Final editing of this book is on Zoho and it is far ahead of microsoft word which is at-least one decade behind.
Zoho is an Indian company with data centres in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. All development is in-house. No data selling. No American surveillance embedded in the infrastructure. The real signal came through Arattai, Zoho's answer to WhatsApp. After government endorsement, sign-ups jumped from 3,000 per day to 350,000. It became the top app on Apple's store. Citizens are switching away from American messaging platforms to Indian alternatives at scale. This is not resistance. This is decoupling is happening in real time.
China took comprehensive action, building parallel systems across multiple domains simultaneously. Baidu rivals Google. WeChat replaces Facebook. TikTok challenges YouTube. This alternative ecosystem reduces American leverage significantly by providing viable substitutes for American-controlled platforms. China never permitted enterance to its market beyond a point of symbolism, including digital marketing.
Next is trading platforms like Amazon. India's Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is an initiative aimed at promoting open networks developed on open-sourced methodology. The goal is to democratize digital commerce and make it accessible to small and medium enterprises. This represents a deliberate attempt to escape the American platform monopoly.
High Ground of Space
America's space achievements went far beyond inspiring moon landings. Satellites enabled global surveillance networks. GPS guided precision military strikes while appearing to offer civilian navigation services.
When America denied GPS data to India during the 1999 Kargil conflict, it revealed space technology's true strategic purpose. India's response took nearly two decades. NAVIC became operational by 2018 with seven satellites rivalling GPS accuracy. But most countries cannot replicate India's massive investment and technical capacity.
China's BeiDou navigation system provides global coverage with equal accuracy to GPS. Russia, Iran, and China routinely jam American satellite signals, turning technological advantages into strategic vulnerabilities.
Space wars are already discussed in an earlier chapter. Space medical research remained classified, forcing India to seek Russian collaboration. China built Tiangong station alone after exclusion from the International Space Station. This is another decoupling from the Empire built on paper.
Telecommunications
AT&T's transistor invention didn't just enable mobile phones. It sparked the entire telecommunications revolution under American standards. U.S. satellites connected remote regions while military forces maintained secure communication lines. Allied nations adopted American telecommunications standards, embedding American architectural preferences into their communication networks.
The security implications are enormous. Governments routinely confiscate phones during sensitive meetings because of surveillance risks. Third-party encrypted phones represent attempts to escape American communication monitoring. Every call, text, and data packet potentially flows through American-controlled infrastructure. Connectivity became a comprehensive surveillance and control mechanism.
Now China has its own OS for Mobiles through Huwai, Russia has Aurora and India has announced BharatOS a, fork of android. It is designed to provide an alternative to foreign platforms. It is developed under the Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS) initiative. Soon it will be rolled out for tablets and laptops too. In 2025, Russia has also launched Aurora as an OS for laptops and computers. All aimed at decoupling from the long arm of empire.
Cultural Programming
Hollywood does not just entertain. It shapes global aspirations and narratives. According to former Indian intelligence chief Vikram Sood's research, Pentagon oversight ensures film content aligns with defence objectives. Top Gun glorifies military technology. Marvel movies promote American individualism worldwide.
The distortion is systematic. Films portraying India focus on poverty of a few millions despite the remaining 1.39 billion people living in vastly different realities. This is not an accidental misrepresentation. It is strategic narrative control. American cultural exports create demand for American-style institutions, values, and policies globally. Soft power builds loyalty more effectively than military force because people embrace it willingly. Problem arises when Hollywood is forced to dub its movie in Hindi for launch in India. It is difficult to control the nuanced American adulation in Hindi. Viewers notice.
Scientific Research
American universities did not accidentally become global research leaders. As earlier discussed in the chapter on Education, the Manhattan Project established the template. Massive government funding for scientific research with immediate military applications.
Research funding creates intellectual dependency. Global universities align their research priorities with American funding opportunities. Alternative research paths get starved of resources. This creates academic monocultures that appear naturally evolved but are strategically engineered. But American expertise is losing credibility as already discussed extensively. Every large country is focusing on its own research and China is certainly leading in many fields.
The Capability Gap
The pattern of American technological dominance assumes continuous innovation advantage. But what happens when rivals do not just build alternatives. They build better ones.
Russia deployed hypersonic missiles in 2018. India tested hypersonic systems successfully in 2020. China operates multiple hypersonic platforms. America's hypersonic programs remain in testing phase with repeated failures. The Pentagon admits operational systems are years away.
This is not theoretical. Russia and India both possess hypersonic strike capability right now. America cannot match this capability. Worse, America has no defence against hypersonic missiles. Existing systems cannot intercept targets travelling that fast, manoeuvring that unpredictably. The physics is unequivocal.
Declining Innovation
America's technological empire faces the same fundamental challenge as empires built on military conquest. Advantage is temporary. Once rivals match capabilities, dependency chains can work in reverse. Supply chain vulnerabilities, manufacturing capacity constraints, and technological competition reflect these changing dynamics.
This is not about moral judgment but understanding how technological architecture shapes geopolitical power. Every nation must navigate these realities whether building, breaking, or adapting to systems of technological control. The empire built on silicon and software faces the same fundamental challenge as empires built on steel and gunpowder. All advantages eventually face challenges from those who learn to work around them. The Fundamental difference is that Steel and gunpowder are visible threats. Technology was not, until all pretence was dropped and it was openly weaponised for crude tactical advantages. It was a dumb idea but it happens when nobody is in control.
But America is a military superpower. It creates a worldwide awe. How will it pan out in the era of technological shrinking. We shall discuss Military Superpower status in the next chapter.
