Chapter 20: Popular Nazi Economics

Chapter 20: Popular Nazi Economics

A bill becomes invisible when juggled.

Nazi was evil. Right? However, everyone adopted its technologies for space and jet development. But do you know that the present day governments use economic techniques used by Nazis? Everyone thinks Nazi Germany avoided stagflation. They're wrong. The regime did not solve inflation. They hid it using tricks that modern Western economies learned and perfected. This perfection has hid the true conditions of western economies for decades.

Weimar Nightmare

The Weimar Republic was drowned in economic chaos. Hyperinflation in the 1920s destroyed savings. Then the Great Depression hit. By 1932, over six million Germans were unemployed. Foreign credits that kept the late Weimar economy afloat vanished overnight.

This was not an economic collapse. It was apolitical catastrophe. The Nazi party surged from nothing to become Germany's largest party within two years. They promised economic renewal and national strength. What they delivered was something far worse.

Hidden Printing

Enter Hjalmar Schacht and his “New Plan” of 1934. Schacht was Hitler's economic wizard, but his magic was accounting fraud on a massive scale.

The centrepiece was something called Mefo bills. These were not government bonds or regular currency. They were six-month promissory notes drawn on a fake company called Metallurgische Forschungsgesellschaft m.b.H. which translated as the Society for Metallurgical Research. This company produced nothing, sold nothing, and existed only on paper. It was a dummy or shell corporation, as we know it today.

Here'show it worked. Germany needed to rearm secretly, violating the Treaty of Versailles. Traditional government spending would attract attention. So they created this dummy company. Weapons manufacturers got paid in Mefo bills instead of cash. These bills could be traded, sold to banks, and converted into real money at the Reichsbank.

By 1938, the regime had created 12 billion Reichsmarks worth of these fake bills. That is equivalent to their entire normal government debt. They were printing money without calling it printing. The finance came from nowhere that anyone could see.

This was not clever accounting. It was systematic deception designed to hide a war economy from international observers. The financing was not for recovery. It was for military aggression.

Forced Price Suppression

By 1936, Hitler imposed comprehensive price and wage controls. Violating these controls could result in death. This was no more an economic policy. It was economic totalitarianism.

The regime did not eliminate inflation. They repressed it. All those Mefo bills created massive inflationary pressure, but instead of letting prices rise, they forced them to stay low through violence and terror. They forced banks to buy bonds and raided savings accounts to cover the shortfall.

Rationing for ordinary Germans became universal by the war's start. Consumer goods vanished from stores. People stood in long que for bare necessities. The government controlled what you could buy, when you could buy it, and how much you could pay.

This created what economists call “repressed inflation.” The money circulated in the economy. But it could not express itself through higher prices. Instead, it showed up as shortages, black markets, and the complete breakdown of normal economic life.

Modern economists studying this period found that while official inflation statistics looked stable, the real welfare impact on German civilians was devastating. People could not get the goods they wanted at any price. The state decided everything.

Grand Robbery

By 1938, even the Mefo bill system was breaking down. The government faced difficulties issuing new bonds. The parallel financing had reached its limits. So the regime turned to something much darker.

First came “Aryanization”, the systematic theft of Jewish businesses and property. It started as “voluntary” sales in 1933, where Jewish businessmen were pressured to sell at below-market prices. After Kristallnacht in 1938, it became outright confiscation. The proceeds funded the war machine.

Then came mass enslavement. By August 1944, forced labourers made up one-fifth of the total workforce in the Greater German Reich. These were not just prisoners of war. These millions of civilians from occupied territories, were forced to work to death in German factories and farms.

The scale was staggering. The regime stole an estimated $580 million in central bank gold alone. Total theft from Jews across Europe reached $230-320 billion in modern terms. The Reichsbank melted down gold teeth from concentration camp victims.

This was not a sustainable economic model. It was a parasitic system that required perpetual conquest to function. Each new territory provided fresh victims to exploit and assets to steal.

Modern American Way

Think this is ancient history? The United States uses remarkably similar techniques, just with better marketing and no death penalties.

The Federal Reserve's quantitative easing works like a sophisticated Mefo bill system. Instead of creating fake companies, it creates electronic money. The effect is identical. The visibility is not. The Federal Reserve cannot directly buy government bonds from the Treasury. That would be obvious money printing. So it buys bonds from banks and primary dealers who just purchased them from the government. Same result with extra steps.

The Fed creates new money electronically and credits it to dealers' accounts. No printing presses, no physical bills, just digital entries in computer systems. The dealers get cash, the Fed gets bonds, and the government gets funded without appearing to print money.

During the 2008 crisis, the Fed's balance sheet exploded from $800 billion to over $4 trillion. During COVID, it shot up to nearly $9 trillion. That is trillions of dollars created from nothing to buy government debt.

This keeps interest rates artificially low. If the Fed were not buying these bonds, the government would need to pay much higher rates to attract real investors. The hidden subsidy is enormous. Some economists estimate it saves the government hundreds of billions per year in interest payments.

But the inflation does not disappear. It shows up in asset prices instead of consumer goods. Stock markets soar to ridiculous levels. Real estate has become unaffordable for entire generations. Art and collectibles explode in value. Ordinary people cannot afford homes while asset owners get rich.

This creates massive economic distortions. Companies borrow cheap money to buy back their own stock instead of investing in productive capacity. Zombie companies that should fail get inexpensive refinancing. Resource allocation becomes completely warped.

The government can keep spending without immediate political consequences. The real cost gets hidden in asset bubbles and wealth inequality. Future generations pay through reduced living standards and economic instability.

Japan's Three Decades

Japan has perfected hidden inflation over 30 years of stagnation. The Bank of Japan owns more government bonds than entire small countries' economies. They getaway with it because demographics work in their favour.

An ageing population naturally creates deflationary pressure. Older people spend less and save more. They downsize homes, buy fewer cars, and consume less overall. This demographic trend masks massive monetary expansion.

The Bank of Japan owns over 50 percent of the entire Japanese government bond market. They have created more money relative to GDP than any major economy in history. Yet official inflation stays near zero, sometimes negative. But look beneath the surface. The real economy has stagnated for 30 years. Real wages have fallen consistently. Young people cannot afford to buy homes their parents could easily purchase. The birthrate has collapsed as economic prospects dim.

Corporate Japan became a wasteland of zombie companies. Businesses that should have failed years ago get cheap refinancing. Productive companies cannot expand because capital goes to subsidize failures. Innovation dies under mountains of easy money. When was you last read of anew Janapnese innovation? Try to remember.

The government can run unlimited deficits because the central bank buys everything. Debt to GDP ratios that would terrify other countries look manageable in Japan. But the cost shows up in lost decades of growth and a society that has given up on the future.

This demographic cover story only works temporarily. Eventually, even ageing populations need inflation to service enormous debt loads. When that moment comes, Japan will face a choice between hyperinflation and outright default.

China's Shadow Financing

China runs a parallel financial system that would make Schacht envious. Local governments cannot borrow directly under Chinese law. So they create Local Government Financing Vehicles. These special entities issue debt that does not officially count as government spending.

Shadow banking in China reaches over $10 trillion. That is larger than the entire GDP of most countries. This allows massive infrastructure spending without showing up in official deficit figures.

Here'show it works. A city wants to build new roads and airports. Instead of borrowing directly, they create a special company. This company “borrows” money from banks and shadow lenders. The city guarantees the debt informally but not legally. The company builds the infrastructure. The debt sits on private balance sheets, not government books. International observers see manageable government debt levels while real borrowing explodes in the shadows.

But the economic distortions are staggering. Ghost cities dot the Chinese landscape because local officials need projects to justify borrowing. High-speed rail lines connect empty stations. Massive apartment complexes sit vacant because no one can afford them.

Property prices have become completely disconnected from Chinese wages. Young people cannot buy homes despite working for the manufacturers that supply the world. The wealth flows to politically connected developers and local officials.

The system creates perverse incentives everywhere. Banks make loans they know will never be repaid because they expect government bailouts. Local officials approve projects based on borrowing capacity rather than economic necessity. Resources flow to waste instead of productivity.

When this system breaks, it will not be quiet. China has created debt levels that dwarf the subprime crisis. The difference is scale, and Chinese growth masked the problems for decades.

European Accountancy

The EU perfected financial creativity during decades of crisis management. Countries used derivatives and accounting tricks to hide their true borrowing levels.

Greece used Goldman Sachs swaps to conceal debt. These transactions were technically legal but completely deceptive. Greece appeared to meet EU debt limits to maintain its EU membership while actually borrowing far more than allowed.

Other countries played similar games. Italy used derivative contracts to smooth out debt statistics. Spain moved regional debt off central government books. Portugal used public-private partnerships to hide infrastructure spending.

Event oday, the European Central Bank runs massive bond-buying programs that function as indirect government financing. EU treaties forbid direct government funding by the central bank. So they buy bonds in secondary markets minutes after governments issue them.

The effect is identical to direct financing but the legal fiction is maintained. Governments get inexpensive funding and the ECB gets to claim they are not monetizing debt. The inflation gets exported to asset prices and currency debasement. These programs created massive distortions across Europe.

Southern European governments can borrow at rates lower than many corporations despite running enormous deficits. German savers earn negative real returns while their government benefits from artificially low borrowing costs.

The eurozone became dependent on these programs. When the ECB tried to reduce bond purchases in 2018, government borrowing costs spiked immediately. Countries that appeared financially stable revealed their complete dependence on central bank support.

The European system papered over fundamental economic imbalances between member countries. Instead of allowing natural adjustments through currency devaluation or inflation. They created a permanent transfer mechanism disguised as monetary policy.

Removed Guardrail

The Glass-Steagall Act, enacted in the USA in 1933, separated commercial banking from investment banking and created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to protect depositors. The act sought to reduce conflicts of interest and excessive risk-taking.

Over decades, many provisions were weakened. Then in 1999, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act repealed Glass-Steagall entirely. Commercial banks, investment banks, and insurance companies could now consolidate under one roof. No explanation was offered for this change. No warning was issued.

The immediate result was predictable. Sub-prime commercial loans in 2008 when non-viable loans masquerading as legitimate lending, were bundled and sold as investment products. The system created incentives to make loans that would fail, because the banks that made them did not bear the risk. They sold them to investors. The lack of regulatory separation contributed to risky financial practices and the proliferation of complex financial products designed to obscure risk. The system collapsed.

Calls for reinstating Glass-Steagall provisions to ensure financial stability and consumer protection were dismissed. The industry that profited from deception had become too powerful. The system that produced the crisis was allowed to continue.

Invisible Straightjacket

All of these systems, Nazi Germany, the USA, Japan, China, Europe, operate on the same principle. They hide inflation through mechanisms that average people cannot see. The suffering gets distributed as rising asset prices, falling real wages, prohibitive housing cost, and the inability of young people to build the lives their parents took for granted.

Nazi Germany used death penalties to enforce price controls. Modern Western economies use subtler forms of financial repression. Savers earn negative real returns while asset holders get rich. Young people cannot afford homes while baby boomers see their property values soar.

The inflation is still there. It has been redirected from consumer prices to asset prices, from visible statistics to invisible wealth transfers, from immediate pain to long-term economic distortion. The bubble is in the stock market, real estate, art and anything that sits on a balance sheet.

Systems Eventually Break

The Nazi economic model was unsustainable because it was predatory. It required constant expansion and fresh victims to maintain the illusion of prosperity. When the conquests stopped, the system collapsed.

Modern Western economies face a different but related problem. Their financial tricks allow unsustainable spending and monetary expansion, but the underlying economic distortions keep building asset bubbles. It results in wealth inequality and debt levels reach dangerous extremes.

The lesson is clear. You cannot solve economic problems by hiding them. Whether through fake companies, price controls, quantitative easing, or shadow banking, the distortions eventually demand a reckoning.

The Nazi regime's “economic miracle” was revealed as a bloody mirage built on theft and slavery. Modern economies may face a less dramatic but equally inevitable reckoning when their financial tricks reach their limits.

Reality Check

The Nazis ystem achieved full employment and stable prices on paper. German civilians lived under rationing, shortages, and state control of basic economic decisions. The “economic miracle” was a totalitarian nightmare built on printed money and expropriated wealth.

Modern Western economies do not use death penalties to enforce price controls. But they use subtler forms of financial repression that produce similar results. The appearance of prosperity masks the reality of decline. The question is not whether these systems will break. The question is what kind of society will emerge when they do?

Misplaced Priorities

All of this deficit spending, all of these trillions created from nothing, all of these hidden transfers of wealth, where does it go? Not to education. Not to infrastructure that benefits ordinary people. Not to raise living standards for the next generation.

The United States runs trillion-dollar deficits while American schools decay. The government prints money electronically to bailout banks while students graduate with debt they will carry for decades . This is not accidental. It is the system working as designed. The deficit goes to military bases in 800 locations worldwide, to subsidies for failing corporations, to wars that achieve nothing but generate debt. It goes everywhere except to the citizens.

The contradiction is deliberate. America refuses to fund public education adequately, then uses visa restrictions to prevent imported talent, creating artificial labor shortages that justify high wages for the few while the many struggle under debt.
